['getɪ], Jean Paul, amerikanischer Industrieller, * Minneapolis (Minnesota) 15. 12. 1892, ✝ Sutton Place (bei Guildford) 6. 6. 1976. Getty betätigte sich seit 1914 in der Erdölgesellschaft seines Vaters George Franklin Getty (✝ 1939), die er unter der Firma »Getty Oil Company« zu einem der 50 größten Unternehmen der USA ausbaute. Er wurde auch wegen seines außerordentlich hohen Vermögens bekannt.
 
Getty gründete 1953 in Malibu (Calif.) das J. Paul Getty Museum. Es beherbergt u. a. eine Antikenkollektion, eine Sammlung illuminierter Handschriften, Gemälde des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, kunsthandwerkliche Arbeiten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts sowie eine Fotografiensammlung. Das Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities, ein Forschungsinstitut der Kunst- und Geistesgeschichte, umfasst eine Bibliothek, ein Archiv und eine Fotothek. Es gibt die wichtigste kunstwissenschaftliche Bibliographie heraus (RILA). In dem nach Plänen des Architekten R. Meier 1997 errichteten neuen Getty Center in Los Angeles sind Forschungsinstitut und Museum (mit Ausnahme der archäologischen Abteilung, die im Museum in Malibu bleibt) vereint.
